AdvanMux-110
Basic recommendations
Always have all AdvanMux ports connected:
To 50 ohm antennas
Or to 50 ohm terminators.
This will ensure the reader is protected against receiving too much reflected power. For example when a non-connected port is addressed.
Never switch to a non-connected port wile the RF operation is enabled.
AdvanMux is not a replacement for the Impinj Antenna Hub.
AdvanMux requires a custom application that executes GPO command to control the AdvanMux operation.
Tips for running AdvanMux with readers other than AdvanReader
Three approaches exist:
Synchronous reading
Each antenna is read after another. Each antenna is given a specific read time.
A complete read cycle would looks similar to:
Read antenna connected to reader port #1 and AdvanMux OUT#1
Configure reader to read in port#1
Configure all reader GPO ports to 'low'
Read for a specific time.
Retrieve read data
Read antenna connected to reader port #1 and AdvanMux OUT#2
Configure reader to read in port#1
Configure all reader GPO ports to:
GPO#1 to 'high'
Any other to 'low'
Read for a specific time.
Retrieve read data
Iterate all antennas
Asynchronous reading
The reader is configured for autonomous operation, the GPO lines are switched asynchronously.
For example if we had 2 AdvanMux connected to ports #1 and #2, and 8 antennas connected to each AdvanMux, the read sequence would work as follows:
Configure reader to perform autonomous read at ports #1 and #2
Switch periodically the GPO lines to iterate through all antennas:
Each AdvanMux must have the same number of connected antennas. That is, the antenna structure must be symmetric, that will avoid conducting power to non connected antennas.
The time between GPO lines changes will vary from case to case. 150 ms seems to be a good starting point.
When using the asynchronous approach, always make sure all ports you address contain antennas or 50 ohm terminators.
In case a non-connected port is addressed while the reader RF is enabled, the reader may be damaged.
Managed asynchronous (ThingMagic modules only)
The reader is configured to use the internal multiplexing option.
Check reader parameter: /reader/antenna/portSwitchGpos
Please take into account that:
Only two ports are available, and therefore only 4 ports of the multiplexers can be handled.
The tracking of the active multiplexer port is lost. That means, it is not possible to know the source antenna of read tags.
This option may require some electronics to connect the module and the AdvanMux

FAQ
Connecting AdvanMux to reader modules
Even though AdvanMux electronic levels are compatibles with a reader module, when working directly with modules several things might be taken into account:
It is required to build a cable to connect the module output lines to AdvanMux input lines.
The GPIO lines from the module should be protected against ESD to avoid module damage.
For an initial test or proof of concept is fine to connect the AdvanMux and the module without any protection. For real applications some electronics would b required.
Using AdvanMux with Impinj readers
AdvanMux can be used with Impinj readers.
Please note that AdvanMux must be controlled using the GPO signals of the reader while Impinj AntennaHUB uses a different control method.
AdvanMux is not a replacement for the Impinj Antenna Hub.
AdvanMux requires a custom application that performs the right command to control the mux operation.
Using AdvanMux with Sargas Reader
AdvanMux can be used with the Sargas reader.
Unfortunately when creating the Sargas reader ThingMagic discarded the native multiplexing capabilities of the ThingMagic reader chip and in order to use the multiplexers they must be programatically switched using the ThingMagic API ( com.thingmagic.Reader.gpoSet(GpioPin[] state) ) . Please refer to the sargas advanmux compatibility file below to see the electronic requirements to make the AdvanMux work with the Sargas Reader.
Due to electronic constraints, the Sargas Reader max Antenna Number is 8, using two AdvanMux-4 on each antenna output SMA.
